Tig welding Practice advice please

Hi all

I am doing my Lvl 2 C&G in Tig welding, i am practicing at home and would like some advice please on the welds.

the set up is 1.6mm electrode and filler wire
65Amps
6lpm
Base is 1mm s/s
tube 2mm s/s

This i did in a single run,

Should i have penatration on the inside?

With a fillet weld all you're looking for is to get fusion at the root i.e. if the weld were sectioned it'd look something like this...


There's more examples in the TIG tutorial section on fillet welds and an example of lack of fusion (LOF) at the root here... Miller welds 10 common tig problems. Fillet weld size is explained in the TWI link

Might be the pic but the weld looks undercut. There's 'coking' visible on the backside of the joint (the rough/lumpy grey stuff which is heavy oxidation) which'll be hard to avoid without a purge when welding 1 - 2mm stainless. Might as well mention arc length as i always do... http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=7862 although with thin stuff it's generally harder to avoid burning through than it is to end up with LOF defects

No should i have?

No, you dont need nor want to put a bevel on a tube to sheet weld (or any fillet weld) with thin material, unless you're doing a 'T butt', but I can't see why you would want to without backing gas.

You want your weld to be alot smaller/thinnner, it's way to big for the material. Try turning the amps down a bit, maybe to about 50 and keep the arc length as short as you possibly can.

What size ceramic are you using? Size 6 is about as large as you can really get away with, anything larger stops you getting in properly and doesn't really make any difference with regard to gas shielding. Can do it with a 1.6mm filler, but you might find 1mm easier.

Oh, and the gas should be ok at 6LPM.
