Walking the cup is the only way for most to complete a 100% integrity root pass for pipe welding.
I have been pipe welding 30 years and only ever seen about 5 people that can free hand a root and can do it proficiently enough to pass an xray, one of those was a women. Walking the cup is the standard.
It really is not that hard as you have the pipe bevel to guide you along, the trick is in the wrist and an even applied pressure down the rig shaft, too heavy pressure and the cut will slide and stick, too little your speed will be compromised.
A flex head coupled with a stub tungsten stop will help you out miles while trying this procedure.
Make a t-joint on your welding table and practice, use a small cup, practice while the machine is off, a little effort will produce some wonderful results.
