Thanks for info. I'm struggling to find pipe training over here unless I pay around £200 a day.

£200 a day is cheap for skills training that helps you earn better wages.
It costs me £275 a day to re-qualify for gas safety exams.

you don't want to spend £200 a day training for a job that's not waiting of you though. That is a big difference! I nearly took helicopter lessons once over but then I worked out i cant afford to buy and run one once I qualify

I think you can spend the money on learning to pipe weld or fly a helicopter without having the path laid out before hand.
It's only once you have that qualification the doors are easier to open. I did my CSWIP 3.2 a couple years ago off my own back while working as a shop/site Forman in a fab shop. That helped open a big door to change my career path to a technical support level in welding.

It shows initiative, I'd be keener to employ someone who had got on and paid for a course off his own back, I'd see him/her as motivated and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one out there who recognises the importance of that.

I have nothing lined up in terms of a job. I'm currently employed but in a job I dislike. Nothing guaranteed ill even get anything out of all this training! But money spent on skills is money well spent IMO.

Oh I certainly recognise the motivation. However lets face it nobody is ready to offer someone a job without a vacancy to fill! Unlike some quals you actually need to use them in a given term, you don't just keep them hence the mention of Helicopters (flight hours have to be kept up).

In many respects I don't disagree. I made a good living out of training people once over and my wife is a VP of decent size FE provider. Don't let me discourage you one bit just be aware and plan the next step with care and in advance of finishing

With or without quals if the job isn't open there is no job so you are right in that respect but if the job is open the guy with the codes will get it before the guy who wants the codes.

Of course as long as they are current, that is the rub though and why one needs to plan ahead in advance.
