tig machine star 160ac/dc

hi every one i' ve just been given a startig 160 ac/dc machine has any body got any knowledge or experience of these machines , im particullary interested in there ability to weld aluminium , any knowledge or experience much appreciated ps if cumbriasteve sees this thread thanks for your info on the butters 180 , i bought it , so far so good!! cheers people. mikey 123

If it's ac then it will do alu, 160 amp is probably going give you a max of about 5-6 mm. No experience of that set myself though sorry so can't comment on anything else

At 160 amps I think you'll be lucky to get 4 mm going from cold and in the fillet joint 3mm is realistic. That said I'm talking from a cold Alu point of view. When heat soaked then you can go thicker on lower current. A Helium mix puts those amps to more use also.
Regards the unit I've never used one. Put up a clear pic of the dash board and I'm sure we'll easily work out and explain the controls.

thanks for your info, tinbasherdan & richard im gonna try welding some mild steel with argon, just to make sure the machine works& then i'll try alumium by the way tinbasherdan is that picture a pre fuel injected r1??

Yes mate, 4xv model, the mk1 on carbs rather than the witchcraft of fuel injection

Ha the lass on the back in the pic is my mate, that's at the tt on the mountain and I may have forgotten she was on there, I was north of 140 at one point, she nearly cried

140 eh? That's the exact speed I saw on the clock on mine when I said that's enough and sold it. I've still got my TRX 850 though.

That's just unneeded unless it's fitted with wheely bars and sent down the drag strip. If a 1000cc sports bike ain't quick enough on the road in naturally aspirated form then that's mad.
140 on my c1h was delt with in 3rd gear. I thought that thing was loony I cannot imagine what they are like fitted with NOZ and turbos. Crazy.

C1h kwak? Never a fan of kawas, the early ones just have rubber frames and the I just don't get on with the new ones! He built it just because he can tbh, goes to bike shows on it just for a walk around and ends up winning them, it's a lovely job

I couldn't disagree more these things were built brilliantly. Far better than than the 55 plate blade I had after it. I've not rode a machine that comes near it for raw power. Had her put out 163.3 at the tyre. And at 174kg fully gassed (nearly 1000bhp/ton) it was insane.
Yeah I know nowadays 180bhp is the norm on a thou but then a lot of these new bikes have the traction control, abs, electronics etc. any way we've gone way off topic. I'd have a 2004/5 kwack over any R1 personally. They are true raw power machines that don't tolerate mistakes. (Amazing)
