Tig Brazing

Hello

Had a go today at tig brazing 1mm mild steel, what a disaster!!!!

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?

Used a silica bronze rod, pure argon and a thoriated tungsten tip.

I have been led to believe that this is the correct set up and it is a easy as soldering!!! Think not!!!

What did not work? Maybe post some picts or a better description of the problem.

Gas brazing rods will not work as they have zinc in them and will flare up real bad. Maybe you rrods are not TIG rods.

I was using a BOC silica bronze rod, it just kept burning up un could not get it to flow at all.

Can you recommend a rod and a supplier?

Is a thoriated tungston correct?

I have dabbled in this one as well, just the same results (or lack of) just sort of fizz fizz popsplutter as the zinc burns off.
Will folow this thread with interest.

Yes, i tried it with the wrong rods. i picked up some unmarked bare rods that were 36" like most TIG rods. They were the zinc type.

I would think you would need a very short arc gap to keep the heat down and a foot pedal to lower the current way down when you add filler.

Needs to be a copper-silicon based filler rod, your standard silicon bronze brazing rods won't do. Sifbronze "Sifsilcopper No.968" or similar

That triggers a memory. When I first started messing about with welding I tried using coper as filer with Tig welding. Not as a structural thing but purely decorative, gave quite a nice effect. The test pieces are somewhere but I bet I will never find them. An interesting experiment.
