Thunderbolts ?

A simple question.
Thunderbolts, fantastic things self tapping screws that work in concrete.
Do they work in tarmac?
I have a piece of sculpture to install on tarmac path.
I also have a bag of the bolts.
Will they do the job or is it expansion bolts I need?

Tarmac? No.

Ellie says a difficult one to fix to. Expansion bolts no good either, tarmac is too soft. Resin not much better.
We always get someone to dig out a nice neat hole and fill it with concrete then we fix to that.

I doubt very much that tarmac is hard enough to tighten the screw down.

There is a special expanding bolt for tarmac. From memory, they are just shield anchors with a rubber sleeve over them....

As above though, dig out a nice neat bit, fill with concrete a few inches below, bolt down and fill with a bit of patching from a bag.

We've used the ones Rocol supply for fixing down plastic speed bumps - Pacers i think they are called. Not great but ok for light duty fixing.

going to struggle mate... not made to take fixings

as Paul... we usually cast a 'kin block of concrete before the tarmac goes down & fix into that...


Deep hole with a length of studding & cheminal anchor may do the job.... 3-4x what you would normally go

Cheers for that guys, I will give it a miss.
A local pub is having an art exhibition and want to have my seahorse as a feature.
However it is not going on tarmac, I did wonder if it would work.

I shall file those away for future reference, but I am doing these guys a favour and aint paying a tenner for the privilege.

Sounds more like a job for a big lump of 1/2" plate as a heavy base. Also possibly more trouble than a favour is worth...
