I think it was brewdexta that was asking about having threephase installed and we all were giving our ideas
Well the guy over the road was advised ( wrongly) by electrician that he needed threephase and he asked for a quote
well here it is

This is VERY cheap just look at the cost of 8M x 35mm 4 core
the dearest thing was excavating a7M trench and tarmacing foot path !
when I did mine I did all the excavating and making good I supplied the cable and they wanted £5K
I got them down to £3k !!!

I would imagine there's already three phase in the area so nothing needed changing. I wonder how much I'd have to pay.

why did the guy need 3 phase ??

He is a dental tech and has had a new milling machine, laser scanner and tempering oven all single ph btw but as soon as the tempering oven was switched on it tripped the rcd, he had the leccy out to check it out and he fitted a C 32a mcb !! to that ring, obviously that did nothing to stop the rcd tripping.
The leccy then advisesd him he needed 3ph, one ph for the house, and one for the lab and one spare!! so the guy looked for a quote to get 3ph hence the above ^^.
I heard about him 'needing ' 3ph and thought hey ho, i might be able to get a cheaper 3ph quote /job if we had them done together, from the same pole, the poles are on his side of the road though. And they now dont like to go overhead with new 3ph supply.
I asked what have you got that is 3ph " nothing " well I couldnt let him go down that route because the fault would not be resolved.
The oven is brand new 1800 W on a13A plug.
i said i think you have accumulative tripping, let us switch off all the mcb's and check, sure enough with just the lab on, the oven worked fine , as we brought in the various trips, it then kicked out the socket rings 30ma rcd.
in the lab alone there is probably 25 doubles around the walls all on one ring !
I said if it was me I would have a seperate cu for the lab split into 3 rings on rcbo's and let the house have its own cu and rcb.

But short term the offending ring could be wired direct off the main switch, cut the buzz and let that ring have a dedicated 32 A rcbo.
I got a mate in to check out the system and thats ^ ^ what he did.
He checked out the sytem, fitted the breaker and it cost neighbour £100 to have the lab up and running.
It's maybe not ideal but its now running fine, seems the original leccy was talkin out of his workpants.

Had all the gear but no idea

Ps machine stated it required C16 A mcb.
I was speaking to another leccy and he had had the same issues withe the EXACT same italian make tempering oven and miller and he fitted a seperate clean radial with own rcbo! to sort the job.
Problem is the miller works on a cnc computer and all the data is lost if the mains trips also the settings are lost if the oven cuts and it ruins the item / denture

just put on double marigolds-------- and a mate with a wooden pole. to turn you over when cooked.

Would it be frowned upon to borrow a socket from my neighbors each side and join up the lives to make a three phase supply for the garage?

That was underground and many years ago, I could not believe when one guy turned up to do it !!
ps our supply now is on overheads but they now, wont go overhead with 3ph to the house ??

who knows what their electricity meter would do, RCD on their supply would pop due to the neutral/line aka live imbalance...

Well you have to be sensible-------- and come off the line before the meters for the extensions, coz it would save them getting nasty bills and things

leave well alone with stupid ideas of using another phase of someone elses property . have u ever thought of the possibility of a power faliure on one phase and back feed along the line snuffing out an engineer or anyone working on the system also in public buildings that have 3 phase and lighting is over a couple of phases in a 8 gang switch it must be marked on the front with a 415 sticker indicating so /13 amp sockets must not be near each other on diffrent phases so that apliances plugged in can be touched together in close proximity

Years ago my GF and I rented a flat above a shop, to get to our private bathroom you had to go via the communal landing so I came up with the bright idea of knocking a new doorway through the wall from our bedroom straight into the bathroom. This was fine apart from the hot water tank was in the way.
I checked with the landlord, who was a friend, and he was happy for me to move the tank into the loft and make a new doorway.
This all went swimmingly, I even found an unused heavy duty live spur in the loft for the immersion heater.
GF was happy as we no longer had to go to the bathroom via the landing, landlord was happy as it made a vast improvement to the flat.
Roll on about 2 years and we are just packing up to move out to a cottage in the sticks and I am chatting to the guy who leases the shop, its a sweetshop and tobacconist and he mentions that he is thinking about jacking it in and moving on as he not really making a profit anymore since the under 16 fag buying ban, he then said "It was all right till about 2 years ago, I was breaking even, then for some reason my electricity bill shot up, my quarterly usage doubled, I have had the leccy board out to test my meter and they said it was working correctly".
After chatting to him I pondered on what he had said and it dawned on me that 2 years was about the time I moved the hot water tank.
I checked and you've guessed it, the spur for the immersion heater, which we left on 24/7 and regularly used to fill the huge cast iron bath and our hot fill washing machine, was running off the shops consumer unit and not ours!
Feeling incredibly guilty but not brave enough to own up, I ran a new feed from our consumer unit to the immersion, I also anomously posted £50 through his letterbox a couple of months later.
Whether he ever guessed that we were the cause, as his bills must of halved after we moved out, he has never let on and he kept the shop running, I still pop in occasionally for 1/4lb of fizzy cola bottles, the GF calls them my guilt sweets!

Ive got 3 phase in my house. I have split it per room so you cant get a cross phase shock but theres no legal requirement fo that here. Because its a new install I had to have the install signed off by a inspector who picked up on some petty things that an electrician friend said werent even in the regs. We have the watertank and some heavy consumers moved onto seperate phases to the main sockets but they are all tucked away in the loft or elsewhere.
Meanwhile at my other house the 90 year old neighbor next door regulary washed down her 3 phase cooker with watr and the fuses are nails on a bit of wood exposed. The joys of rural electricity installs
