threads in the end of box section.

I have to build something that I wish to be able to take apart if it needs to be moved.

Essentially it will be built out of box section. It might be Aluminium or Steel not decided yet.


I will need to bolt cross pieces in place with bolts going through the side of one section and then into the "end" of another section

I have thought about various methods such as welding bolts onto thin section and welding it in the end. Using thicker section and tapping the square section before welding it.

For the Ali route the second one would be the best I can come up with the steel route I could do either.

Any one got any suggestions?

Hey I am still open to suggestions and cheaper suppliers. My problem was when I started looking I did not know what to search for. Google is good but not quite clairvoyant yet. After I posted I found by accident the first one and it started to become easier.

I am still hoping for alternative suggestions and suppliers though

I've done it in the past by spinning a piece or round bar till it's a tight fit in the end of the tube and then tapping it with my desired thread. Drill a couple of holes across the end of the tube before inserting my threaded insert. Then insert the threaded piece of bar and puddle weld through the holes. If you make the original bit of bar as long as you can sensibly tap you can just keep parting off another piece as you go.

I've always had more trouble putting in neat crush tubes where a bolt goes through a piece of tube to hold it to something. If anyone has a clever way of doing those whilst keeping the ends nice and flush I'd like to hear it.

i have made my own before now. Get a bit if plate the size needed to cap the box section, drill the tightest hole you can to allow the bolt through then weld the head of the bolt to the back side of the plate, offer the plate up to the end of the box and weld it in

Thats what I think i will end up doing . I was just hoping one of these clever people on here knew of a cheap supply.....lol

I've several old Mini radius arm pins lying under the bench for just such purposes as they are a nice fit inside 25mm 1.2mm box section already (but hardened at the ends so can be a pain to drill and tap).

From the look of the Internet links none of those inserts will take a high load under tension. I agree with the post from ibrooks as that would be the strongest method

Why am I a dumbarse lol I can see it now you said it again. lol Yeah I could tack round bar with the welder so its strong enough to be bolted together. Saying that if I use a larger bolt that it needs I might get nuts pre threaded to tack in place..MMmmmmm thanks guys...

With a little bit of filing/grinding a 16mm nut(24mm spanner size) will be a tight fit so they can be puddle welded in place. Or a 14mm nut(22mm spanner size) with only filing to 2 corners of the nut can be welded around the edge.

Only just seen this, I do quite a lot of this kind of thing fitting castors and feet to tables, conveyors etc, sometimes I make them but can buy these weldplates for less than £1.50 each in stainless, not worth the bother getting the kit out at that price. these are 30 x 30 x M12, I get them here. http://www.casrollers.com/
