A guy I know recently bought a 3-phase TIG for the workshop. I had reccomended to him to get some tuition on setup and basics etc (he has a MIG and stick welder already). He did agree and I asked a guy I knew to come along and give him an afternoon's basics.

Anyway, curiosity got the better of him and he decided to 'have a go and see what happens'. I walked in on him just as he was setting it up. He had the flowmeter on upside-down, and a full length of ally filler rod fitted into the tig torch

hahaha thats brilliant my 78 year old grandad the first time we had a play with my mig he asked me where do i put the rod!!! hes only ever done stick1

first time i showed my dad how a tig was used he set up a fillet weld in 2mm alloy and set off burning holes in it telling me id told him how to use it wrongly not as classic as yours pete but left me scratching my head

I was looking for a welder to work for me a few years ago and he tried welding stainless with an ali filler rod.

I still mix them up to this day, annoying, even more annoying for the lad who has to grind it all back again.

funny diddy welder

I saw a diddy at the car boot sale who had "welded" a peice of steel angle onto a generators ally alternator housing, for a replacement leg, it was just a huge mass of slag holding it on !

When I was in tech college in Sweden many years ago learning to be an auto mechanic, we had to rotate through different workstations and one was welding, oxy welding/cutting and stick. The deal was when we finished each station we had to do a handover to the next candidate.
So in behind me comes this Greek guy who could hardly speak a word of Swedish. I went through it, showing him 'here is the helmet, the gloves, the coupons and here is the stick welder and the rods, etc'.

He picks up the rod holder for the stick and looks at the business end of it and asks me with a very heavy greek accent "where does the gas come out?"
