i got this itch and need you guys to scratch it, i want to put together the finest craftsman and develop the best auto shop ever. Here,s my master plan,
i need 2 MASTER WELDERS, 2 MASTER BODY FAB guys, 1 BRILL PAINTER, i can cover general ENGINEERING side, 1 ALL ROUNDER cover anything. 2 MECHANICS
I d like a couple of apprentices (there,s not enough of em) if you have any kids grandkids who play 18 hours a day on their pc lets have em, A general admin person to run our www. and office side (maybe a moderator might apply mmm) 1 DRIVER dogs body iv,e e-mailed MICKEY TEUTUL AMERICAN CHOPPERS.
OH and a tea lady, i was thinking CHERYL COLE ( i like our CHER), but am open to discuss. (WHO,S YOUR TEA LADY!)

think you've under estimated the kit costs a bit..

5K for all the welding and burning equipent ?

5K for a nice tig
5 k for a fancy pulse mig for ali
£500 for a big 2nd hand 3 phase std mig

and need to ***** more than £1500 on advertiseing

A lot of outgoings but nothing about income... any thoughts on how much needs to pass through each week to keep the doors open or is it a 'build it and they will come' dream? [/smug know it all]

Being a bit more serious one of my best mates owns something similar (everything* except for paint under one roof for rods/customs/classics- there was a Jaguar SS in for a new hood last week and insurance cover came up ). Took him 15 years to get to that stage and it got exponentially harder as he grew- he's a car/bike guy, hands on 'engineer', fabricator not a businessman but can he no longer do what he loves as 1/ customers want to speak to him not a manager and 2/ there isn't the money for him to try i.e. zero chances of him being able to put in enough hours on the tools to cover the costs of another paper pusher

*strictly speaking it's not everything except for paint as other stuff gets subbed out to... for example used to have blasting kit but it wasn't used enough to justify i.e. paying rates for the floor space the kit took. A cabinet for small bits and pieces makes sense but proper big gear needs to be used constantly to be justified. On the other hand a painter (cycle frames) i know went the other way and upscaled their blasting kit to a proper big room and huuuger screw compressor- they now get more paint work as a result of the blasting side of the business

Seriously though HOT ive obviously underestimated the task.

I hope your mates business works out o.k. for him, he sounds like a true grafter.........

Nice idea, I think we all have a similar dream ! One thing you have omitted is working capital. Without enough in the bank to cover all overheads for at least a year it wouldn't have a prayer. The only alternative is to grow on income, very precarious, that's why so many businesses fail in the UK, cash flow and inadequate capitalisation.
High end restoration or commission builds are already served in the UK, there are some very well established companies covering, IMHO, the available business in the here. We are a small country and not very rich per capita, so there isn't an oversupply of the type of clientel that don't have a budget.
