This is aluminium is driving me MAD

whatever power level and wire speed I try, I get nowhere

Argon gas, plenty flowing - CHECK
Torch positive - CHECK
0.8 aly wire and 1.0 tip - CHECK (ive had same results with .9)

more wire speed = more pile-ups at the roller, wire sticks to tip.
less wire speed = melted tips

more power = completely melted tips
less power = wire just forms beads on the work and burns back sticking to the tip when you let go of the trigger.

So, WTF ????

Use about a 1/2 to 3/4" torch/work distance (I stay closer to 3/4"). Torch very close to vertical and use a push direction.

Wire speed is very high. Rollers just tight enough to push the wire. Too tight and it will deform the wire causing drag.

make sure the plate is clean, clean, clean

Have you fitted a teflon liner as well ? It sounds like you need to clean the oxide layer off of the metal from your description. Get some Scotchbrite and acetone and get rubbing.

I bought a stainless wirebrush, which ive been using lots so I think thats not it BESIDES Ive had a bit more luck just now using a midway wire speed and about 100a (its 3mm plate ive been practising on)
The liner is steel but SIP say its for both aly and steel, you just have to keep 2 - one for each BUT Ive just been using the same one BUT, like I say, i'm starting to get somewhere so I'm going to try shenions technique tips and see if I can get the poxy little job done - its such a stupid little thing, I don't want to spend money if I can get away with it CHEERS ALL
