I've heard of coke cans being welded with tig i was curious as to what was the thinnest stuff you lads had welded. I imagine its a very difficult thing to do.

I tried doing some ali coke cans end to end a while back with varying degrees of success,
i'm sure with some more practice i might manage a pass right round without blowing a hole,
they are pretty thin at i'm guessing about 20 thou?

Parlour tricks aside probably 0.35mm / 0.014" stainless car trim for a roof chopped car. Ally probably 0.6ish mm, radiator tubes are thinner than that but i wouldn't say they count as it's usually just tacks to repair a leak rather than having to keep things aligned etc

Here's a thick to thin parlour trick that personally i find more useful practice than welding razor blades or drinks cans to each other as you need enough heat to get a weld pool on the heavy chunk and be quick/accurate enough to avoid burning away the thin side

We used to demonstrate the versatility of the EWM Tetrix 230 by setting it to AC special pulse and welding a piece of 1mm ally sheet to 10mm ally plate, it looked a bit like your razor blade setup but in truth its a bit of a gimmick as nobody does a weld like that in the real world. However it did serve to demonstrate the level of control and precision available in the machine.

Agree with you there about it being a bit of a gimmick, althooooouugh,
you never know when the ability to weld a joint like the one pictured may arise, stranger things have happened!!

Did try cutting a coke can in half lengthways and welding it back together, a long ol time ago now. Let's just say it didn't go very well lol. May have to give it another go if I get time to while I'm at work at some point though.......watch this space

slit a coke can with a stanly blade and weld it isn't actualy that hard, micro torch feck all current and uber thin wire. but it's completly pointless

thinest ali i've welded up with an actual pourpse was an oil cooler, probaly 1mm or 0.8 mm and it was a complete bitch

I used to work with a bloke like that, we called him Teflon Eddie The thinnest thing I actually welded was a laptop hinge.

Done coke cans end to end in the past quite easily. On an actual job I would say 1mm Ali a few times.
Using a pedal it's much easier to control the extremely low currents required for thin gage stuff

Stainless down to half a mm is probably the thinnest I've ever done on a job (air craft trays for the trolly dollys).

I once welded some steel that was so thin you couldn't even see it, I just assumed it was there. Was in the vicinity of a plastic 'Transit' badge....
