Just learned that the house 2 doors down got broken into on monday morning. at half nine in the morning. Thieving ******s stole the presents under the xmas tree. they removed the pane of glass from the downstairs upvc window. so much for modern windows and doors. This plastic crap they sell us really is rubbish!!

yeah, there windows opened outwards so beads probly on outside. just checked our windows, all beads are inside apart from top window.

on my older type windows with external beads the window is siliconed in
only two windows at the side left now to change we had a spate of thefts about 5 years ago doing this the other thing was gas blow lamp on the door panels then push them in again early type doors ours have the steel renforced bit in in them but if they want to get in they will

Our windows all open outwards but they are internal glazed. Most older double glazing is external beaded and you can flick the beads out with a narrow scraper. My brother in law had a break in a few years ago through the plastic door. The thieves obviously knew a bit about the doors as they drilled a hole with a spade bit and operated the lock mechanism.

scary. Id much rarther have a propper solid wooden door with a latch and a couple of dead locks. ive seen that the panels in these plastic doors car be quite easily booted out. A friend of mine has some seriously good doors on his house. very similar to these doors http://steelsecuritydoors.co.uk/ i dog sitted for a week once for them. i usualy feel a bit unsafe sleeping in a different house on my own for the first time, but not with those doors

Its not just the windows though. A lot of firms fit windows in with just expanding foam. I think most expanding foam has a ten year life!! What happens after that is the foam starting to degrade/shrink? I know of one building site getting its windows pinched from the fact they had just been fitted that day with foam. Make sure they fit them with proper screws!

I had an attempted break into my barn a few weeks ago, fortunately they came across one of these that stopped them.

Cost me the price of a new door though as they bent the mechanism that operates the bolts. My insurance excess was just over the price of the door.

I'm no longer going to pay to insure contents, waste of money, would rather put the premium into a savings account.

I had a break into the house a few years ago, the loss adjuster wouldn't pay out because the door lock wasn't a 5 lever lock. The fact that the door had so many bolts on it that the thieves had to jemmy the frame out so bypassed any lock was immaterial in their eyes.

I have a Rockdoor on the back of the house - its plastic but has a steel mesh core, this was after another failed attempt to break in by some muppet ruined the back door.

I've also had my container broken into and a mixer and wacker plate stolen, all tools are now in the barn behind steel doors but if they really want to break in they will.

Oh - and some body stole some stone wall tops.........

I had a padlock tampered with last night, the same thing happened this time last year a few nights on the trot.

I suspect Santa's little helpers are trying to help themselves to the contents of my yard!

A friend of mine was a window fitter for years, at one firm he worked for the salesmen were for lying through their teeth telling customers how secure their product was compared to competitors. Before leaving the firm he showed quite a few customers how easy the window units were to get into from the outside and they should speak to the sales team about it!

Had my garage broken into a few weeks ago. I've come to the conclusion that its not so much about having security, but having security that they can SEE. If they see you have cctv (even dummy ones) etc then they will most likely be persuaded to just walk on by and find an easier target.

A friend of my wifes had the york stone slabs lifted from his drive in broad daylight on a main road. No body challenged them. Must have thought he was having some work done on his drive.
He has now fitted CCTV cameras.

I can vouch for that, I had a break in at my last house, all hardwood doors and double glazing. They levered one of the openers out of the frame to get in, then attacked the 5 lever mortise locks on back and front doors to carry out their "loot", failed on both so had to get it all out of the window.

As a footnote, the isurance company wanted to replace the damaged doors/windows with UPVC but agreed it wouldn't match the existing woodwork so paid out over £6k to have 2 windows and 2 doors custom made and fitted.

I have two Staffordshire Bull Terrier crosses (one crossed with Rhodesian Ridgeback)that sleep on the bed with me. Slightest sound and they run growling to the front door. Gives me far more security than any locks or alarm.

lights also help the thieves see what they are doing and can be a pain when your trying to sneak up on them. Used to get loads of trouble at my dads house but not had a single problem at my house, must be the Ridgeback X Bullmastiff.

Don't be lulled into any false sense of security of how good a door is if its got a euro lock cylinder fitted as the lock, the door can be made of solid 10mm steel plate but the weak point is the cylinder itself, it's very easy for a thief that knows the basics to remove and bypass these cylinder locks.

You can get the replacement modified (anti snap/anti bump) ones for around £30 and it's well worth it.
