Thickness for welding table

I have been pricing up 8x4 sheets of steel and can't really afford anything thicker than 6 mm plate for my welding table would this be OK or a total waste of money do I need thicker many thanks Adam

I've just made a welding bench for home hobby use and I've used a 6mm sheet, spot on for me, I wouldn't want anything thicker unless it's for all day every day use.

My 800x800 table is 3mm steel covering some left over breakfast bar/top which is 45mm thick has served me well now in its 4th year

My 740 x 1400 mm bench is two layers of 3/8" (about 9.5 mm so total 19 mm) plate laminated and plug welded together - why - because that's what I had at the time

It's extremely solid and allows me to clamp things down or bash them about without the table being damaged - been using it for 15 years and it's as good as new. Big heavy lump to move about though, so it's on locking castors.

About same price down here for a 8'x4' in 6 mm

I'm not far from Doncaster how long ago was it you bought that? I was getting quotes of 115 plus vat for 6mm not from there but someone close by me

Mine is 3mm on. 30x30 box. Ridgid as anything and strong.

Bought it 10 days ago, delivered 6 days later when I had time off work or I could have have it a lot sooner.

Made mine from an old Steel pallet with 6 100x100 box section and a 12mm top absolutely solid just lucky I didn't have to pay for the top

That is just after I had a tidy up try and do it once a week or I end up with a tiny area for welding and the rest of the bench is storage
