It's worth doing that with any payment over your " I can afford to lose that" amount. I pay £1.00 and confirm with the recipient it all went through ok.
A lot of fraudulent payments start with a small transfer to test and then a large one so expect your bank's fraud department to call if you try this...
Never had a problem doing that but even so a call to check its kosher is no problem surely?
Last one was for 10.5k (bathroom and new boiler) and I sure as hell not sending that sort of money without being damn sure who's getting it.
