Thermal Arc

[Mid Wales welder]

I have just been looking at the thermal arc multiprocess 252i, it's got some Excellant stats & at a pretty good price of around £1300. Does anyone have any experience with this welder or any other thermal arc welders? I think they are produced mainly in USA & not sure what the support would be like, I don't think it has a euro torch connector either so not sure how easy it would be to get new torch! Any info would be great! Thanks.

just had a little look, it has a tweco connection whatever that is! something american haha assuming uk and american spec are the same, you will be able to find the torches but they're likely to by quite expensive/much less choice, they list some on this site link

My Lincoln SP-170 has a tweco connector.It's just a hollow brass probe fitted with 2 "O" rings that is pushed into the connector block on the machine and is secured with small winged setscrew.The "O" rings form a seal for the shielding gas and the trigger wires usually are plugged in separate.Takes a little more time than a euro torch but not much.

ahh same thing as I've seen on welding tips and tricks guys videos about the hobart ironman 230 I reckon, looks a decent way to fit a torch.

Couple of things here. Thermal Arc stuff is generally pretty good. Did you see that 252i for sale in the UK ?
Thermadyne Europe (Chorley) don't show it in their products list.

Their machines for the European market all have euro fittings.


If you do end up getting one of these plants a replacement Tweco connection type torch wouldn't be hard to get. Any Thermadyne agent in UK could get one for you (or even spares for your old torch)

No I havn't seen one of these for sale in Europe but I will find out the next time the welding consumables guy stops at work & will let u know!

Yeh I thought the European models would come with a euro connector which would be handy! But good to know that it's easy to get a tweco torch if need be!
One thing I couldn't find out was what fuse it takes, it runs off a 240 supply but guessing with a max rating of 300amp it must take a 16amp fuse or more?!
Could it be run at low amps on a normal 13amp fuse? Thanks!

Yeh I really like the 'welding tips & tricks' site, it's just got so much info & videos, I could watch them all day long! I subscribe to his weekly videos which are really good, he is a very knowledgable welder & he's got info from beginner all the way up! Great site!!

yeah i noticed most of their machines are listed as euro torch here, but the 252i is listed on rapidwelding, and the image and downloadable PDF show the tweco one, so i'm guessing it's the tweco type, but might be that they use the american pdf and image but modify the machine? doubt it some how though!

jody's (welding tips and tricks) videos are by far the best welding videos i've found! it's great that some one takes the time to share their knowledge like that

Yeh it would be fine if it's the tweco torch as long they are easy to get replacements, spares and consumables! I'll keep looking tho & like I said I I'll ask they welding consumables guy who comes to our work but the won't be till next week.
There is another one coming out in the summer which will be one to look out for!

Yeh welding tips guy is really cool & defiantly good that he puts so much time and effort into it, I know he sells a few things but he doesn't even push the which is rare to see as most sites like that just want to sell sell sell! I would love to get into the sort of work he's done! Just need to get my skills up!
