Well, I was doing a completely unrelated task on my BlunderBus today and I uncovered this

After a lot of panicking I realised that it's not actually structural as such - the van has leaf springs and the chassis rails that they bolt to are in good shape, as are the arches themselves, so the rot is just on the floorplan really. Bloody rubbish Japanese metal.

So - can I just patch these? If I cut out the damaged areas, fabricate a new plate out of sheet and weld it in, should it restore it to its former glory? The rest of the van looks OK apart from one of the inner wings which also needs attention. But obviously with that as it is I don't really want to be carrying anything in the back, in case the floor falls out

cut it with what dear lizer???umm an angle grinder with cutting disk . a plasma cutter tinsnips burning gear a chissel ect ect edit not forgetting an air saw edit again a jigsaw 4got the dremmell

Think MOT man will fail even if rusting is not structural but within 30cm of structural mountings. Cut plate to cover all rusted area then mark outside of plate onto floor panel. Cut out old and weld in new.... with straw dear Henry.

I would use butt joints to avoid water traps.

good old transit you can buy the full step which looks like a good idea, there doesnt look like much life in whats left of it

Yer well it's all going to be bodged up for the time being monies tight atm,so its galv plate,rivots and lots of black sticky stuff,
That'll keep dear liza quiet for a while,lol

i'll get some pics of what i had to do to the lwb tranny ive been welding up for a mate. both bottom steps , sills inner and outer, both rear door bottoms, all arches. nice!!!!!!
