I think my most memorable moment of insanity must have been the old pillar drill. It's a gorgeous old bit of kit, (bit is a vast understatement), and will be even better when I sort freeing the rusted solid drive spindle and getting it all fettled, back together and running, but it's just so damned big and heavy. Plus I had to trek way down south for it. Plus it's still laid on the floor of the workshop over a year after getting it here, just because I can't lift it up on my tod, there's no real place for attaching a chain hoist or such near it and it's now in a spot which is a bit too confined, (due to the fact that later additions have had to be placed around the floor space it hogs), to be able to get someone else in to help give a lift with it. Not one of my finest moments. It is a stonking bit of kit though, and as old as the hills.

Matt make yourself a four legged A frame and blag a chain hoist to get it upright & in the right place .
I myself have never ever purchased something and wondered WTF did I buy that for ?

Another week, another random purchase. My guess is it's for quick comparison of offset surfaces ie if you were milling a step or turning a pulley? The correct name would be appreciated... (it was £1.50 for those I know here who are interested with a similar impulse buy affliction 
)

I've leant it up against the wall for the time being and thought sod it.
On a tangent, first time I've seen the model imprint on it, when I leant it up. It's a really old Pollard Corona, so unintentionally, both my pillar drills have ended up being by the same manufacturer. Was sold through Buck & Hickman, (are they the company who do the Roebuck brand these days?).Aye, it's not specifically a case of wondering why one got something, but rather why does one keep inflicting that pain on themselves. You know the thing. Get something which is way too heavy and then you're having to strip it down so you can move it, something which hogs half the space in the shed etc.
i bought a singel phase brook motor off ebay. rung the blocke up about it and he said it was a huge thing and very heavy i thought he must have diffrent definition of big and heavy to me.
anyway rocked up there to collect it in the passat it was a singel phase brook motor made in 1957 and must weigh near 200kg ( i can just drag it about )

Yes their own brand is Roebuck.
My old Cincinatti lathe had a brass Buck&Hickman tag on it, I had a Denbigh drill, again Buck & Hickman tag, a Victoria Tapping machine, again the tag, a small Denbigh or Victoria vertical mill again the tag. There was something else, equally old, with the tag.
When they opened the depot in Crawley, I asked if they wanted to buy the lathe back;-)

You are better off taking or buying something if you're not sure you want it or not , you can always give it away or sell it on. I always regret things i didn't take/buy rather than the stuff i did, example , a rapidor hacksaw being skipped for scrap at work was offered to me for nothing , didn't take it because i hadn't a spot to keep it. I always regret that.

Almost as bad... I bid on a Bridgeport mill on Ebay and 'won' it for just under £500 (with DRO, J or M head, I forget which)... anyway it was only then that I realised I didn't have the headroom to fit it in my garage so I apologised and sent the guy £50 for his trouble (he was emigrating so needed a quick sale and I bu99ered his schedule up a bit).
A few weeks later Nursy bought the place she has now; you could stand one Bridgeport on top of another and still have room to fly a plane through the gap, in the workshop there
