The way i am treating my resto paint/rust

Right guys i just wanted to make sure i will be doing the rust prevention technique at least to a correct standard on my cortina.

basically i will be repairing a lot of rust on the chassis floor pan and general body, after welding in new panels this is the way i am prepping and preventing it from rusting again

after new panel/piece welded in will be cleaned back
then etched primed
then bonda primer(zinc) will be brushed on top when etch is dried
the either stonechip on top if underside then paint
or if elsewhere on car after bonder primer, prime and paint

does this seem all good to you guys after a lot of reading here and elsewhere this method to me seems it will last loong!and doesnt seem too OTT

etch primer will be pukka Bilt Hamber stuff

I thought zinc primers needed to be in direct contact with metal to be effective, possibly an epoxy primer instead of the etch/bonda. Ensure that as much / all old rust is removed as possible.

bonda primer is effectively red oxide , i just thought to put it on top of the etch to add extra protection and yes all metal will be clean and rust free

If you are unsure then do a scratch test on a sample (small piece so you can dry it somewhere warm).
I know that good quality etch-primer on bare metal can't be scratched off with a coin, don't think your bonda will be very good, but give it a go. I prefer two pack primer over self-etch.
Use what car makers use - it won't be Bonda....

i wouldnt use the bonda primer there is another thread on here where the op has used it and his paint is now chipping easily, not sure if its down to bonda but it could be
also if you use etch primer there is no point in the bonda stuff and i dont know of any body shops that use it, in my opinion stay clear of bonda and use the tried and tested paint systems if you want to guarantee the job turns out right

Bonda is old and well-known, but as always follow the instructions. The other poster with a problem doesn't know what the issue is, whether it's Bonda, not keying it as most zinc primers seem to need, topcoating within the window, coating the whole car in phosphoric when Bonda is meant for steel, or whatever.
2k's great if you have the gear, but otherwise a decent zinc primer like Bonda or 182 is prob a good bet, I know a guy who sprays 2k but still swears by zinc primers.

dont try and do extra layers ...etch or bonda

whatever you choose needs to be in direct contact with the clean metal to work well

or forget both and use epoxy primer , its tough as hell and can be left in the damp while you finish the other work
