Now I may not agree with all H&S rules. But each site has their rules and we have to obey, if just for a simple, easy life on the job.


So imagine my annoyance and utter disbelief when working on a site, CCTV job, when the site safety officer told be I could not use a certain tool.

“It is classed as an Offensive item, it could be used to stab someone.”

Here is the offending item.





Ok. I put them away and carry on. I did keep calm, just.


I finished the job and pointed out in my tool bag was the following items.

Stanley knife,

Hack saw.

Side cutters.

Laser pointers.

Screwdrivers

Slip jaws.

Gas Makers pliers.

Plus, as you can guess a whole host of other items.

He went white and ran off. Returning with his manager.

She asked me about the “Dangerous items I have confessed too”

I told her they were tools I need to complete my job.

She looks at them, I will have “A strong, loud, one way conversation with him, again”



My work mate was hiding in the van almost wetting himself. I made him buy me a Greggs.


This may seam a bit silly.
But I was in a school hall. All be it empty.
I did have a chat with the Head Master and pointed out what had happened.
The way ahead now, as normal. Is that one will be up a ladder working and a second person would act as a guard to stop some one steeling items what may be used to hurt others.
What a sad world.

I remember years ago when health and safety was starting to ramp up. We were building a new Melinar plant on an ICI site. On Teesside. It was announced the job had to stop for an impromptu safety talk.(hundreds of men) A new female safety officer had "caught" one of the riggers chewing a sweet. She had shut the job down to tell us it is forbidden to eat food on a chemical site.

Its been a disciplinary offence for a number of years to have a bungee cord in our vans at work - could have your eye out. Its much safer having tools and equipment falling out at you when you open the doors.
Also, its absolutely fine to drive home in a 3t guided projectile after a 24hr standby shift.

I once met a bloke who fitted artificial eyes for a living, Bungee cords are responsible for may accidents including a large a mount of eye damage, so the Safety bod should ban them but provide an alternative, or as you say you will be injured by falling stuff, another typical ban it but don't resolve the issue

eating/drinking anywhere near a lab is 'heavily frowned upon' even as low as at o level/gcse

i'm guessing it just carries over to industry.

I went into Fawley refinery near Southampton last year to load a pump assembly. (Less than 1 ton, and I turn up with a 150 ton 8 axle low-loader ).

Before accessing the site, I was given safety glasses because mine were “...not of the correct standard”. The site was apparently next to a main pipeline that feeds aviation fuel to Heathrow, and I asked what would happen if the shtf. “Well, driver, you, me, and everyone for miles around will be vaporised!” But surely, said I, your safety glasses will protect me??

I still can't decide if someone was taking the mick . . . last team brief at work had a reported near miss in the car park . . . someon reversing out checked the way was clear . . . then the reversing sensors triggered . . . someone passed behind him, so he stopped. Then two more did. So he waited, then left.

Going forward, he will reverse into the spot . . .

When I left the UK in the early 2000 it was an acceptable level. Came back in 2013 to find everyone's gone mad on h&s

I was once told by a Site Dafty officer, I had to wear a safety harness and a lifejacket while repairing/testing an under bridge MEWP over deep water, the cherry picker was located on an embankment footpath. He got told if he wanted the MEWP repaired, "To go away in jerky travel mode, I will not wear a harness and a lifejacket together". He wasn't a happy bunny, but he didn't come back after I reported him to the site operations manager.

I used to work in aggregates and it's been reverse park only for 10-15 years.
They also changed near-miss to near-hit.....if you nearly missed something you must have hit it.

Years ago on a new build site I was sketching some site run pipe work, mate was lifting DIMS I was sketching site run, safety guy sticks his nose in.
Where are your safety gloves
Me, They're in my pocket I'm sketching
Him, there are gloves for every situation.
Me, OK pal wait there while I go to the stores. Told the storeman the situation and he said tell him to FO, so went back to safety guy and told him and he did.

I'm all for health and safety personally; I've had a few scrapes when I was younger that could have been avoided and a few near misses. What I find annoying is the "jobs worth" sort, those who come to work and leave common sense, if they ever had any, at home.

Moving furniture from a three storey building into a skip, we were told everything had to go via the lift, so when a cabinet twice the size of the lift had to go, I asked if we could disassemble it. Its not your property to decide I was told by the H&S officer, you must skip it whole so we carried it down the stairs - first landing and the H&S officer is at is again - it’s not safe to carry a large object down the stairs, it must go via the lift... I reminded her of our first conversation and then pointed out the fire risk of leaving a stairwell blocked. Which of the devils will ye choose? we carried it down ‘under supervision’...
