The thin plates from the core of oil filled welder

I've just scrapped an old Oxford welder, oil/water cooled and the thin plates that from the core of the transformer look too useful to scrap. Any suggestions? Shims for lathe tooling was one of mine, but I have a Dickson toolpost.

Any other uses? Anyone want some for shimming? They are under 1mm thick, I can measure them if wanted.

The are called laminations and are made of a special steel - something to do with Eddy and his currents (presumably the ones washing the stones of his lighthouse)...

Soft iron.
The metal allows eddy currents to form and act effectively in the transformer.

They make soft shims.

Eddy currents are not "allowed to form". They happen, in any conductor that is exposed to a varying magnetic field. In a transformer, eddy currents flow in a short-circuit through the resistance of the conductive material - the iron core - and so they waste energy in the form of heat. They are not effective, and they are not desired. To reduce the current, the cross-section of the conductor is kept as low as possible, hence the laminations and the insulating lacquer.
Soft iron is chosen for transformer cores because of it's high permeability.
