The magic smoke got out.......

My 2.2Kw HY inverter has died, so it needed an ortopsy, opened it up and found what appears to be a burnt out resistor and a relay.

No signs of any other burnt bits although theres a possibility the track to the resistor is fubared.

Any one have an idea of the resisters spec?

Your considered opinions, please.

Worth trying to repair it or just bin it?

120 Ohms, 5W? What does the other resistor have printed on it?

If it's the pre-charge circuit, the resistor is in series in the mains supply to the rectifier, to limit in rush current when you turn it on and the dc bus capacitors charge. In normal operation, once the DC bus is up to voltage, the resistor is shorted out or switched out of circuit.

It's not rated for continuous use, certainly not for the inverter to draw power through it. If the relay failed, the resistor has probably been left in circuit and has been overloaded.

If that's what's happened, and nothing else has been damaged by the heat, replacing both should fix the issue.

Which way has the relay failed? Does it still operate?

Not sure if it can be repaired but worth looking at Victron inverters in future.

Ours has been faultless under hard use most days!

To add, it looks like that resistor is one of a pair. Are they in series or parallel? Either way, I would probably swap both, if they are indeed in the same circuit.

We have a Victron, It did fail & Victron were a costly repair route so we had it fixed elsewhere.

For the cost Victron should have a much longer warranty.

Some top makes have 5 years & some can extend to 10.

As far as I know victron are a top make. Happy to be proved wrong I can only tell you what we have found.

They appear to be connected in series, there's a heat mark in the board just left of centre and the board has a slot around the solder points....see picture

I think Luke has the answer.
You might check the resistor, looking burnt may have been caused by the relay spraying plastic on it.

Yes sorry dint mean to say they were not. Just that other top makes give better warranties.
