Sent my colleague, to get some 2mm, steel plate, 80mm wide by 2 meters, a thin strip of sheet steel, he came back, I looked at it, thought it was a bit too thin, it was 1.2 mm.

I went back the following morning, got some 2 mm, they said someone had left a sheet in the wrong place, apologised, then I found the bill for it €64 !!!!

I was gobsmacked.

Needless to say it's going back.

€64 bloody euros !!!! Yes, they're local, they're not cheap, but ......

Just checked as it seems a bit steep (maybe they're charging for the whole sheet?) and I don't often buy stuff with those dimensions - £9.21 inc vat...

As Ubique says, they are probably cutting it off a large sheet so have to charge for what's left.

when I lived in France there was a French price and a Brit price.....

I have a local French place that is quite reasonable. Either full lengths with the price list by your nose on the DIY cutting machine or, cut what you need and weigh it.
Full galve 1mm sheet is €27. Bought a half 10mm sheet for €180. Prices did jump a bit with covid fall out, but still cheaper than the other place.
No charge for cutting normally, but sometimes the big sheer adds a euro. It cuts the 10mm easily.

Couple of days ago I was in B&Q to buy some 30x5 flat bar. The 1 metre long pieces were £12 and 2.5 metre pieces were £18, so I bought the long one.
Now I have plenty of spare.

But €64 for that 2mm plate is outrageous.

I did ask why they were cheaper (bit risky, that..) The main business is material recovery (scrap) but they have a new materials big shed.
Bloke expained that a lot of it is 'rejects' as slightly out of dimensions. I have yet to measure any tube etc that that is noticably not what it says.
I know them very well, as a client for several years. They appreciate English humour, esp when it digs at both of us.
Their galv RHS is only a bit more than the plain steel, so great for gate frames. Getting it galved later, is two trips of about an hour each way, so four hours and slightly eyewatering hot dip prices.

Bit of entertainment. Local paper covered how the boss built a nice eco house on a patch a bit south in Les Lands, but neglected to get building permission... I asked about it. Lots of smiles and a 'No Comment'
He had to have it demolished.

I know the steel was expensive, but did you really have to get the dogs to stand guard over it?
