Have been reading this forum and the mig welding guides for about 5 weeks now as i have always wanted to try welding. It took about 3 weeks of reading to take the plunge and buy a clarke 151 gas/gasless welder. I went for gasless due to only being able to weld outside but decided on the clarke because i could swop to gas if i couldnt get on with gasless.
M.o.t was due on my old micra (n reg) and had a hole in each of the outer sills and with a little pratice i welded 2 plates over the holes and only managed to blow through the once but managed to fill the hole with weld and grinding it back.
Took it for the m.o.t today and car passed with flying colours and although he didnt think the welding was first class he didnt belive me at first when i told him it was my first attempt and said he had seen and passed many cars that were a lot worse and my welding was well up to the standard for the mot.
Without this forum and its members i wouldnt have had a clue where to start so would like to say thanks to everyone involved in this site.
I asked the tester what they would have charged to do the welding and he said about £100. I spent,
£210 on the welder,
£60 on helmet from the shop on here,
£30 on grinder,
£40 on 4 rolls of wire (like to hoard)
£20 on flap disks and bits.
£360 for a £100 job but none of that mattered when he said the car had passed. In fact i didnt really care about the car passing just wanted my welding to pass.
Once again THANKS to everyone.
