Thai Workshop...

Currently in Chiang Mai for a few days and I love having a peek in the local workshops. Found these two chaps chiselling a radius on the ends of stainless steel strips. They looked like they were making rulers but turned out to be metal frame cup holders.

Also in the same workshop several far east lathes and a mill.

A little further down the road in a garage was what looked like a CNC plasma cutter, closer inspection revealed it was actually a gas torch cutting copying machine - no pics.

Why do they always work on the floor? I guess there’s floor where ever you go, but it would be much easier on a bench behind them

Good question and one ive asked a lot as they do the same in India.

The answer is that these folk are not used to standing. They find I more comfortable to sit cross legged on the floor so that's what they do

Youll be hard pushed to find a work bench in the way we know them

Eastern cultures would probably find it highly unusual how we do everything standing up, it’s just the way they do it.

I watched a video once of a Japanese sward smith, the entire sward from a lump of steel to a razor sharp lethal weapon was constructed with the chaps bottom on the floor.

Yep, I watched the one similar where they were making a Samuri Sword. As you say all done sat on the floor

those are being installed in many toilets in the uk

also great to flush wash them after someones been in them as all goes down the pan
