Testing out a Temu plastic welding gun.

These things melt a wire staple into the plastic, but i played around and you can use it like a TIG with a cable tie as a filler rod and weld along a crack , this was my first go so is rough as a goats knee but it did work.



It got me a free customer return toolbox thrown away by a DIY store.

I made my own. One tip with hot staples: once they're as deep as you like, give them a twist a few degrees, makes a big difference.

There is an attachment you can get to iron over the staples to cover them in. I'll have to save up another 59p.

I used the same tool to sort out the rubber round my windscreen, which I'd scarred with a too vigorous pressure washing. Worked well - can't see the damage from a foot away.

I've stitched split bumpers back together with mine, and loads of auto interior stuff. The entire kits with staples etc in a placcy box with 120 staples and the smoothing bit above are about a tenner with shipping on aliexpress, ie so cheap to buy why fiddle around converting a soldering gun.
The repair is as strong as the original plastic if you anchor it properly and put enough in.
If I want it prettier, I have the type that looks like a soldering iron that has triangle shaped tips and filler rods, so you just butter over the top of the stapled repair with filler and the iron.

I have a front bumper to stitch together on my Peugeot. Only £20 ish for a kit with next day delivery in the UK so that sort of thing looks worth a shot.

Its cordless, that's why its more expensive besides being from amazon.
The 10 quid ones have a lead you plug in and are internally like a mains powered soldering gun but with different shaped prongs and fittings to suit the staples.

Swings and roundabouts on the cord, I use my wired one so infrequently I'd be having to remember to dig it out and put it on charge before using it and the battery would probably go bad in a year or two as a result, so it suits me being wired.
Ive got a glue gun thats internal battery powered that someone got me as a present, and its charged via usb-c lead but always flat when I come to use it and I end up using the mains one it was supposed to replace.

Picture in action on a merc armrest, black gun is the staple gun, and the blue soldering iron looking thing with the funny shaped tip is the one I use for smoothing with filler rods, you can see the filler rods for that in its cardboard box above it & on top of the black plastic box the gun kit comes in.
Also you can cut strips of donor plastic into filler rods like we do with tig on rare occasions when we need a exact match. You can heat and sink in body repair mesh for extra strength around the repair too (which is why thats in the box too, its 3 sheets of different size mesh for different situations and comes with the soldering iron kit ).

I have one of the leister hot air welder clones and I have struggled to get a consistent decent weld with it.
It did pay for itself on the job I bought it for, attaching an inner and outer bumper together. The welds were not pretty but it held together.
But I wouldn't like to use it on a weld that can be seen.

The hot staple machine looks a lot easier to use.

Here's mine reparing my Makita lawn mower. It picked a rock up and smashed it through the side.

It works very well, but I find the cranked end means you have to bend you hand up, then you end up with wrist lock! Next time I will buy one with straight ends.

Tried out a repair on these old work boot soles that had split right across, glued and hot stapled, lets see how long it lasts ?
