Temporary Insurance and can I tax my car with it?

Good morning Gents!

I want to return to the U.K, Christmas of 2015, now my little volvo s40 has been parked up at my parents house since August 2013, and I would like to get it MOT'd again then taxed for 6 months and then get a temporary insurance plan so i can drive it over the 2 weeks I'm there.

The question is, am I allowed to tax my car with a temp. policy? If i tax online would they know its a temp policy or what?

id suggest you look for a policy with good cancelation terms , tax and use the car then refund on what you dont need

RH Insurance (classic specialists) allow cancellation with refund pro-rata. Their definition of classic is fairly elastic, so might be worth a try. http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk/

If the car has been standing untouched for 2 years then the cost of recommissioning, MOT, insurance & tax could mean it's actually cheaper to hire a car for the period

Would it not be as cheap and a lot less hassle simply to hire a car for 2 weeks, especially if the MOT needs any work done...or is it a 'down memory lane' thing with the Volvo.

unless you car is on SORN, then it must be insured, as per new laws so your plan would make you in breach of the law.

yes its currently SORNed at the moment as it has since i left the country.

Those new SORN laws are rigid too. A friend of mine recently got fined for not declaring his car sorn while parked up on private property. So, I guess you will be aware that your car would have to be declared SORN again after the two weeks of use. Bit of a ball ache but it is to try to stop the ininsured drivers.

Hi Sip, temporary insurance is fine for tax purposes, I did this just recently with my late fathers car as I wanted to move it to my house, I had declared it sorn when he passed away earlier this year, I arranged temporary insurance cover for a few days and taxed it at the post office an hour later. They said I could have done it online, I had to sorn it again once moved but It was easier for me to do it that way than to have it transported. Hope that helps.

It only takes about 20 seconds to declare a car SORN on the website, so it's not really a big deal. I don't know why people moan about it so much. Similarly taxing it (ie making it not-SORN) takes under 5 minutes, and can be done from a mobile phone.

Ok thanks for the replies guys, and to answer and earlier question, its a memory lane kind of thing. because i bought the bloody thing 2.5 months before moving out to Oz. as i needed it for the time as my previous car was sold on cheap as it was getting a bit tired. (imagine buying a car and only getting to use it for 2.5 months and then just letting it sit for 1.5 years unloved)

That sounds like every car I bought when I was a young un, although I did get 6 months out of a gas guzzling Ford Zephyr before the engine committed some form of suicide.

When you buy a car from a dealer you can get temporary insurance (14 days) which allows them to tax it for you, so I would have thought it should be ok.
