temp suzuki manifold

I have a long term project on the go of building a buggy from plans, and i have a suzuki katana 1100 lump to go in, what it is is i have built a stand and its almost time to try and start her up. holding me back is the only manifold i have around fits the holes but not will take some editing and re-routing so will it be possible to weld? even just to get some back pressure, must say its not stainless so i gather its some grade of steal?

Excuse the way i wrote that if any makes sense i am a bit sleep deprived lol

pics would help, i assume you means the exhaust tube fits the ports on the head but dont actually line up?

yeh they need cut n stretched. i will have pics up asap,
its just the worry about the material? are manifolds made in mild steel? there is slight rust on flanges so im guessing this is the case with mine.

Also wether there i would get away with a quick weld up essentially to gain some back pressure so i can run it safely for a while without the worry of cracking a valve or whatnot

Original Katana pipes will be steel and 4 into 2 configuration, a 4 into 1 will be after market and more than likey steel too and easy to test with a magnet. You need not worry about back pressure.

As for the back pressure i was under the impression it was an issue but i am now guessing its more an issue over a period of time. so as to see if she starts and how even looking for smoke will be ok for a test with no headers on the engine??? oh and of course the neighbors are not sleeping haha

running with no headers at all carries some risk of exhaust valve damage, not to mention the racket. Its worth putting a foot or so of pipe on each port, it doesn't have to look pretty.

This is the reason i ask haha opinions are like A holes eh lol. i apreciate your opinions both

Big pete.... you mean even if just cutting up 4 seperate pipes (to avoid having to route and join pipes around my home made engine stand) will still help create some back pressure and protect my valves? reson i ask about the lazy way as it will save a couple days messing about to fab up an exhaust and just to do it all again when the engine is mounted on the buggy lol so ideally i can take the lazy option for a quick health check

yep, 4 separate pipes, they will generate some back pressure, but not much, the chief benefit is that they will prevent/reduce cold air getting sucked back over the red hot exhaust valves, the fast thermal transients can (depending on valve overlap amongst other things) cause fatigue damage to the valve stems. TBH, its probably pretty low risk on a bike engine, especially an air cooled one, but its not a big job to make up some stubs.

My mate started his cbr6 with no exhausts on it and not only set his bike in fire but his garage too

As Pete said even a foot is better than nothing

Great minds think alike lol i actually just went and had a look not long after my last post haha unfortunately its a no go though, due to my frame restricting them lol should have thought more into the frame design but was hard enough getting the measurements in 1st place lol

And cheers Big man good clear explanation, i knew the valves were at risk of cracking due to being exposed to colder air but had no idea of exactly how and why i think i will just get the hacksaw out and get some pipes made up, prob going to sound the nuts but the neighbors may not think so haha

Will do when it starts to look like one and i do not want to start another fire in me garage, haha was only a small one but my punishment was cleaning up fire exthinguisher powder Not fun lol so will bear that in mind

If you wannabe a temporary extension piece cut a two inch band off the spare tube then make a slit in it over lap the extension to manifold piece (imagine a large jubilee clip) then weld it all up temporary fixed!

just by chance happened to hear a 1.6 fiesta with only headers and jeezz it was louder than i even imagined lol so i ma start it before i do any pipes but wil be for seconds and wont run properly till i can fumble up some pipes to my silencer. Save whats left of my hearing

Its all on hold though bank screwed me so am on the scrounge for a week until i can get a certain bolt for the valve cover that sheered when getting into it to check clearences. If its o bloody one thing its he next

Yeh i totally agree, pay in a wee brown pay packet should be the way of everyone, cut oot the middle man lol Suppose it feels good knowing i have contributed to some CEO and his retirement plan

And no i actually sadly have not im close to knockhill so always just been the track kinda stuff, Although an exception would be on the tellybox but that don't count haha i do imagine i would be drooling if i heard lve but a 4 cylinder 1100 i imagine wont be able to touch the sound of a roaring v8

No more hickups and i may be able to find out next week
