temp propshafts

before anyone says ha ha, this is not the finished article merely just a suitable prop-shaft of size and length to test me gearbox, and full transmission in the old girl

and i don't profess to be an engineer but i thought id have a go

of course any/all constructive criticism is welcome

would be ok at 20mph and lower, anything more could shake you to bits, or your gearbox/axle

Anything that close to the joint will not affect balance much, especially on a shaft that short. Alignment is more of a problem on a modified propshaft.

looks fine to me done loads in the past on skip loader PTO,S and some of the drivers use to forget to nock,em out off pto and end up with prop doing mega rev,s as the wagon built up speed etc but drivers knew it was still in as gears went tight as they changed up a cog .

also done some on binwagons mounted through radator to front crank pulley now "" they did get some stick rev,s wise and never come to any harm. I always wanted to get a lathe and true them up propper but never got round to getting one etc

if id does run out vibrate at certain revs just counter balance it with some inch by inch x 8th plate tacked on. either ad or subtract till it is balanced its not rocket science

seen a good way for solid dive shafts taper then to a point and fill the gap with weld then turn it goen flush. put a tight fitting 4" long sleeve over the whole lot and weld it up. think he puts over 1000nm of torque through them!

Sorry to tell you but you have timed it wrongly you have it 90 deg out, the Yolks/flanges for the cardens should be in line, it will vibrate like mad because it will double the oscillations of the joints

Norm's dead right, inner yokes need to be inline to each other. One of our lads restored a triumph herald, and had misaligned lhr prop shaft, it shook it to bits!

With a bit of luck can he not just pull the slip joint end out and pop it back in again aligned. I guess this depends a little on where the splines are though.

As the others have said the Yokes should be inline with each other, also you would be better off getting it professionaly welded & balanced

Cheers for the replies guys, but its a temp propshaft to make sure gearbox axles basically drive train is all working and a ok, so wont be hitting the tarmac for very long, ill be going to gwyns for a nice new bailey propshaft when ive got the £250 for it haha

This guy is just over the border in East Grinstead, http://www.autoprop-uk.co.uk/ his workshop is olde worlde but by heck what he doesnt know about propshafts isnt worth knowing and more importantly he is not expensive. I took two large uj's for my truck to him and he made the propshaft while I waited

Its like an Aladdins cave in there

Propshaft services are way cheaper than that, done all mine for last thirty years and i've never paid more than £160

temp or not it needs to be lined up to stop the oscillations and prove everything is OK, also it could damage the other elements of the drive train in a very short time.

Agreed Norm, to be honest i can't see the point in doing the job twice, if your geometry is correct you don't need to try it out at all
