Can someone tell me the following,
1, What thicknes of wire should i use for car body repairs.
2. If i am useing 0,6 wire should i use a 0.6 tip and if i use 0.8 wire should it
be a 0.8 tip, and why?.
3. I need to weld an inner wing to the much thicker chassis leg useing the plug weld system what is best practice to get good penetration?.

More questions to follow as my Mig Welding is c++p.

0.6 is easier of bodywork.

The tip should match the wire size for best electrical contact and minimum wobbling of the wire.

Use higher power setting and wire speed for most penetration. Fo chassis work, you probably want 0.8mm wire.

Like Shenion says, ideally match the tip to the wire, obviously 0.6mm wire will go through a 0.8mm tip but not the other way round. When mig welding using aluminium wire it's actually quite common to use the next size tip up from the wire size being used.
For the plug welds you need to set the welder up for the thicker chassis to get the necessary penetration but will need to be careful not to burn back the edges of the holes too much.

Thank you Shenion and Wozaaah i will fit the correct tips.Will fitting the the matched tip/wire make any differance to my welding. I am haveing great difficulty in obtaining consistancy, As i am welding i do not seam to have a pool of hot metal ,the hot wire comes of in blobs,i get about an inch that is ok then in between blobs i get a gap, when i try to fill it in it all goes wrong, Any ideas. Can someone inform me why i received an Email from MIG WELDING FORUM<no reply@mig-welding.co.uk telling me that a reply has been posted by the above gentlemen.

tel, tell us what kind of machine you are splattering cruddy poo with (i'm making assumptions here, obviously).

Is it a SIP by any chance?

Hi,

it sounds like a wire-feed problem.

Is the reel too tight, is it wound OK or is the wire wrapped over itself?

Maybe the liner and, more likely, the swan-neck are blocked with rusty dust from the wire.

You can get replacement liners and swan-neck liners from Weldequip, he's a member of this forum and you can send a private message asking for prices, ect. You'll not be dissappointed with the service.

Alternatively you could dismatle the torch and blow everything clear with and air-line and it'd probably make a big difference.

Hello Simondrains and Peter 51, the machine i am using is a Sealey Super Mig 185 and the settings are no2 power and6-5 to 7 wire speed ,as it is a secondhand unit i do not have an instruction manual and am therefor working in the dark. I will clean out the feed and nozzle and give it a try. Part of my restoration will require the fitting of a patch panel to a rear wing,this will mean a weld off a metre any advice would be helpful.Also i have to spot weld the inner wings to the frame,should i use Weld Thru primer or not? What is the latest advice on the use of Weld Thru primer?
