TAQA Qualifications

After expressing an interest in doing something like some assessor training to help our engineering based apprentices on a bit, work have eventually approved it.

I'm signed onto an Assessing Competence in the Workplace TAQA, through a local college.
Hopefully it will put me in a position to steer them occasionally, and do the odd assessment at work on the colleges behalf.
Not entirely sure quite how it will all fit in yet, time will tell.

Anyone here done one of these? How does it fit with your work (if you're not working as a training provider.)?
I have noticed that learning and submitting work is very different to how it was last time I did any formal education in the 90s

I'm TAQA qualified, although I work full time as an Apprentice Coordinator, assessing and mentoring Level 3 engineering apprentices.

I'm guessing your role and relationship with your provider will dictate exactly how you will fit in.

But as a Qualified assessor with relevant workplace knowledge, you will likely be a key part in assessing competence.

From my perspective I would be expecting you to act as a workplace mentor to your Apprentices, assisting them with putting together their evidence portfolios for their Dipomas and End Point Assessment submissions (assuming that is a requirement of their Apprenticeship) and acting as a work based assessor (Watching them work and providing feedback and guidance as well as Expert Witness testimonials, which will form part of their evidence to prove competency).

Most work based qualifications work by the Apprentice undertaking tasks and providing evidence to prove that they are competent to do those things (Storyboarding, work based evidence (job tickets etc) or observation from a qualified assessor) As a qualified assessor, working within the industry, you will be in an ideal position to provide that observation evidence.

The key thing will be talking to whoever your current provider is to ascertain exactly how best you can help your Apprentices to gain qualification, and hopfully work alongside them and the provider to assist in that.

Yeah, think that's pretty much what we are going to aim for. It's a new thing for the company and the college, so a good opportunity to build up good links both ways.

The college have just swapped to Pearson, which are fairly new to weld/fab courses i'm led to believe, so currently planning their brand new course content so could be involved with that in the background.

We've currently got 6 workshop apprentices, plus a few others across projects and design, so enough to be worthwhile.
