Tapered tap washers - which way up do they fit?

I cannot recall noticing the taper on tap washers previously. The taper is only slight, but I assume there is a right way to fit it.

Unsure if the widest part goes uppermost, with the narrower part at the bottom?

I'm referring to basin size taps, not the bath taps.

When fitting Basin or Bath taps,
Always fit Top Hat Washers, they spread the 'load' so much better,
The taps are a lot more secure,
And you have less thread to screw the nut up,
Very convenient when you are in a tight space.

ps: I'm not sure which washers you are referring to, Fibre ?

There are lots of different rubber tap washers,
Some may be tapered,
I would imagine may work either way,
Test it and see,

I wanted to be sure. There must be a reason for the taper.

probably the widest of it will go on the seal

I always fit as above, larger dia to the seat side.

It doesn't matter, they are tapered as part of the manufacturing process, if you recut the seat either way will work

Could the taper just be due to the punching out process during manufacturer?
