Tap and Die set

Looking for one of these but confused by the varieties available - simply looking to re thread a nut that the screw broke in - use teng tools, so dont mind having to spend a little

Depends what the thread of the nut is.

What is the nut on?? A Classic car?? a modern car?? a piece of machinery?

Think these are around £200 new, I got mine via: ebay alot cheaper than that.

Tis for a repair to a modern motorbike but in general use mostly modern stuff so metric

There's at least two pitches,three if you count spark plugs,with metric threads.Cars and bikes will generaly be fine pitch,but course will often be used in ali.
To cover all bases you need a set with Taper and Plug taps,Taper for starting and through holes,Plug for blind holes.

I got the Draper 75 piece #79205 for general use,I tend to buy indervidual Dormer in Imperial,as required.

I asume this nut is a Jap arm and leg job which stops you just replacing it.

Saying that,once you've got a set to hand,you'll wonder how you ever did without them.

I was in the same position when I was asking for advice. Dident want to buy cheap but couldent aford all the HSS stuff like what I posted, keep searching ebay for a few weeks and the Hannson set poped up. Think I paid about £50 for it, Snap on & Blue point sell exactly the same one. I had been using/borowing the Snap on one for a while but time came where I needed my own.

Thing is imagen buying a cheap set and snaping a tap while your trying to cut a thread, that would be a nightmare, still can happen with a quality set but I would gess your less likely to. Im lucky enough never to have snaped a tap.

But as I was advised buy HSS and not these el'cheapo, or just buy them the size you need them, one by one, I dident like that idea though.

Personally i would find the original thread size and pitch, beg steal or borrow a tap and or a die.
Just on the spark plug diameter you can have 6 different pitches not two.
1mm pitch is used on varoius above 30mm bore hydraulic cylinders holding 300 bar back!

Cheap rubbish will do for a RETHREAD for a few times but would NOT trust to do a new thread, if you intend to be tapping new threads in the future just buy the best you can afford.

providing u arent cutting hard steels a decent carbon steel one will do everyting u want many times over just make sure there good quality and not cheap crap tracy tools sell them individualy . presto or dormer are a good make

2nd vote for the Lads at Tracey Tools. I once called them looking for a 1 7/8 x28.
I knew it was not going to be cheap but I had to have it, best bit was it was only for one job to recut some weld damaged threads in 7005. Gave them a call, the guy I spoke to said ****** me I had one of those in my hand not 10mins ago, what the hell do you want that for. Told him. It was with me the following day. With the note; Carefully remove wax, use and return.

Now that is Customer service for you

I got a cheapo Draper set for about £15 I think; downside is it only goes up to M6. Have cut a few threads with it though and it seems pretty good quality - alright for occasional use.

I did also buy a super cheap set from ebay but that was a waste of money - the tap handle broke the first time I tried to use it.

I've been collecting single taps & dies and recently took ownership of some metric fine and super-fine ones, plus odd sizes like M7, M9.

I've also got a stack of whitworth ones, which I'll probably never use. If anyone finds need of a whitworth tap or die let me know and I'll sell you one cheap or even free.

As the thread seems to have moved across to cost of said Die/tap. If you ever require a Schrader Valve Tap make sure you are sat down, before you ask the cost.
