Something you need to know is that almost all TV sets on the market, regardless of badge, are actually Vestel (Turkey) manufactured. They are exactly the same innards as one you can buy from a supermarket for half the price.

What about UMC? Are they a competitor of Vestel in the rebadge market or just the Slovakian arm of Vestel?

I was just wondering as I came across a few tellies in the parents house. One was a Blaupunkt badged UMC and the other was a Toshiba badged Vestel. I also had an older (2007) Goodmans badged Kenmark.

The Goodmans still works after reworking some solder joints to the backlighting, but I sacked it off because like the Tosh, they were Freeview sets and no good to me (DTT sound only, no picture, because Ireland / MPEG4)

Now use a 2010 Sony. Although not Saorview "approved" works fine with Irish digital telly system.
