Taking due care

Twice today I drove past guys working in the middle of the road using an angle grinder to cutmetal ( one was a long post and the other was a piece of Armco.) These were workmen and not metal thieves btw.
On both occasions they showered the passing cars with sparks. Apart from the distraction , these cars would have had the metal grindings (for want of a better word) over them .
I would of thought they should have some method of containing sparks . Do they need hot works permits to do this sort of work ?

it would have hissed me well off getting vehicle covered in sparks ive had paintwork and windscreen damaged with them burnt and rust pitted in they could have leased cut the other way or had a screen up

Exactly. When we go on site, i have to do RAMS. One of the specific risk assessments is use of the grinder for cutting. Basically it’s a last resort. If possible will use the bandsaw or Recip saw . If we do have to use it then we have a screen to protect others , as well as inanimate objects in the area.

I had that happen to me twenty odd years ago, Dropped my sister in law off ay here holiday caravan in Whitby, on driving out a guy was standing next to a bare chassis, just as I got level he showered my Volvo with sparks, Ruined all the windows on the drivers side, Strangely the paint was ok but the glass had metal spatter "welded" to it, Got it paid for after a good argument,

Another one that really gets my goat is people power washing their drives out into the road, blasting all the grit & stones into the sides of passing vehicles! They also do it with leaf blowers!

Council using strimmers next to a live lane, with no signage and working next to each other, When I did my ticket for brushcutters and linetrimmers we had it drummed in to us the safety distances and signage etc (When I have to do it in the woods we have signs up and a spotter to alert if a MOP comes down the path, if on a bridleway then it gets turned off if a horse is spotted (tea break time normally)

Even worse is when they are hot blasting road markings off, that stuff really does do damage.
