This practice is common practice in paintball, i use a 4500 psi bottle dive bottle to fill a small marker bottle.

People also use similar methods to charge high powered air rifles

You only have to weigh it in if the gas is stored as a liquid in the bottle (co2) otherwize its just a simple transfer

So far as im aware it is not illegal to do this type of transfer

i see know reason why this is not possible with argon it will just be a matter of getting the correct adapter.

Make sure the adapter has a purge facility or you wont be able to seperate the bottles safely

Look up a company called HPAC they should be able to at least advise you on the equipment you need if not supply you.

You can do this with CO2, Propane, Butane, Most refrigerants etc., because the pressure at which they turn to liquid is much lower than Argon, O2, Acetylene etc., which are COMPRESSED GAS rather than a liquid that turns to gas as it is decompressed.

Its not illegal as in against UK law but the cylinder company would have your **** on a plate for tampering with their property!!

That's if the "rig up" doesnt put the rest of you in a box first.

Its at best 20 quids worth of gas. The proper kit would cost more (without your certificate of competency to decant, the law suit & the remaining half cylinder of gas)

IMHO If you can't use it up just ask someone who will, or return it to the agent asap and save on the rental.

Who is your contract with? I may have a cunning plan depending....

Oops, I've done this once before using a brass adaptor that screwed onto the couplings removed from the regs.
I only cracked the valve of the donor open slghtly.
The bottle recieving the gas got quite warm, and i wimped out and closed the valves off and gently undid everything.
It was enough gas to weld what i needed to, and i'm still here to tell the tail.

Having said this, I wouldn't do it again as i'm sure now that it wasn't safe enough.

However, if someone were to supply a/the kit to do this, i wouldn't have a problem using it. As said though, Ebay probably isn't the correct source.

Decanting Argon

I must agree with Chap....Transferring gas from one bottle to another produces a lot of heat if done quickly. Most cylinders are filled submerged in a water tank and behind a cage just in case of something going wrong, this is how they fill scuba bottles, and a few years ago I had a bottle neck blow completely off and the neck went through the roof of an industrial building never to be seen again. When I phoned BOC they said it could be be excess of a quarter of a mile away, so leave it to the experts and idiots .......
