Bought two used sets.

Should there be a washer or something between these legs and the top (silver) section. It's maybe a millimetre on each side of the leg resting.

I don’t think there is on the older sets, but you aren’t pulling against that surface. The nut on the other side takes all the load

thats how they look ,,, but no harm in adding a bit of punched plate or the likes

Thanks guys. My other pullers, that smooth shoulder sits inside the groove/slot of the cast top section.

That made very light work of that.

They are really good tools. You need four hands to set them up sometimes but can get them in fairly tight spots.

Sykes Pickivant are like Kent Moore and Churchill , a lot of oem special tools are made by those three and given an audi , bmw etc part number ,, sp are way better than they look [ usually] , pays to keep an eye on the tip of the main screw too , a decent tip on there helps a lot , if they wear badly you can counter sink them and use a ball bearing as the pivot point too.

I feel they are the best pullers you can buy, my collection has been one but at a time as and when I saw odd bits, paid for its self many times over

Yep mine are like your setup but the washers behind the nuts were bigger and now fairly bevelled so must be taking some of the strain at times.
The bolts pulling the two half sections together (_____fill in technical name) on mine are actually threaded both ends, might just make them easier to clamp together in a particularly tight spot.
