Swindens... worth buying or trashed?

my answer would be price driven, cheap enough - aye go for it a bit of a clean up it would be fine... If it's expensive walk away.... it's only a vice

Depends how much you want one. Old Swindens aren't exactly refined at the best of times. Main things to check are that the jaw insert ledges are intact, screw isn't bent or elongated, (open it up fully to check for full travel), etc. Looks like weld blobs on the front? They'll chip off.

I'm sure some will disagree, but not even close, even at half that, I'd have to think about it...... swindons are just another vice, personally having used one years ago, found them to be nothing particularly special... never understood why folks rave on about them...

Must admit, they're handy for certain things, but like you suggest, they do little you can't accomplish with a normal vice.

Grump. They're a decent vice, within their limits.

Having two sets of jaws, one straight, the other for pipe, and being able to pivot round makes them really good for working on motorcycle fork legs, as well as the usual stuff.

If I was to gripe I'd say the lead screw thread is a bit coarse.

perfect, stick a bulb and a lamp shade on it, Add 500% mark up, flog it to some hipster... then buy a decent a record 6; hahahahaha

I have a Swindon’s but I prefer my old record. Miss the quick release lever. Paid £50 for mine in a similar/slightly better condition but it cleaned up nice enough if that helps.
