I don’t think I’d be worried too much about what colour or finish is gonna look best on it personally. It’s going in a workshop not to a wedding. Get it bought get it fixed and serviced then put it into use.
They really are superb vices. All I would suggest is once it's really clean right down to the castings, have a think about leaving it raw, especially with your older version. They really do look lovely in the nude. Rub them down with boiled linseed oil too. My understanding is that you can still paint over BLO but I guess it depends on the type of paint.

If my choice of colour (or just having paint) upsets the purists and restorers then that's just a bonus.
Absolutely. While a clean finish might not directly affect the functionality of a tool, it does affect how pleasant an experience it is to use them.
I have. And I get it. Like myself you probably don’t have money to waste so you do what you can to prolong its life. Cleaning stuff doesn’t just make it nicer to use but it’s also preventive maintenance. You've seen stuff like my dewalt drill set
My stuff gets used too, and paint on something like a vice probably won't look perfect for much more than an hour...
It's a tool, not a showpiece and that's why I won't be doing stuff like filling and smoothing on anything - but that's no excuse to leave it covered in crap.
're unlikely to upset me. I mean look what I did to this one!
A good bit easier to clean up oil grease etc off a painted machine too. While a clean finish might not directly affect the functionality of a tool, it does affect how pleasant an experience it is to use them.
I like that, I believe Tom Lipton (As in, OxTool Co) has white vices (Wilton Bullets), they look really good IMO.You're unlikely to upset me. I mean look what I did to this one!
