swapping tax from car to car ?

Anyone know the rules on swapping tax from a scapped car to another one ?
(ie: one that yoyu are going to buy that has no tax) I did look at the .gov tax pages first but nothing leapt out at me, as being germane.

So i thought to myself. 'Ask at The welding forum. They are sure to have someone who knows there'

I think you would need to return the tax disc to get the refund, then buy a new one, using the new keeper supplement bit at the PO.....

Never heard of swapping car tax, As far as I know you have to send in the tax disc from the scrapped car and claim a refund for any full months remaining, And then tax the vehicle you want to use as you would normally .

Has to be on the car itself, the records/forms all that refer to the particular car. So as above, get refund & buy new tax.

Never simple is it? I thought at least you might be able to send in an old disc and ask for remaining months to be put on to another reg.

thanks chaps. In the end since i was going to town anyway, i filled in a form at the regional car licence/tax office in Chester, and handed the disc in there. At least i would have saved a few days on sending it via the post office.

If you swap the tax disc you'll have to swap the number plates as well

dvla only work in full months as long as you get it to them before the 28th of the month they only refund full months
also dealer used to be able to get refunds thats now stopped car has to be registered in your name to get refund

I see you've already sorted this, but a note of caution to anyone else; swapping tax discs from one car to another is considered to be "fraudulent use" of the disc and therefore a very serious offence.

You're better off just driving without the tax...

That is also a PITA if you get caught, which is almost inevitable these days with ANPR.
If caught the vehicle is immediately siezed, then it's £££££'s to recover it from the pound.
Same applies to MOT, once never really bothered with but now jumped on as another revenue stream.

They always used to say that it's done by the postmark on the envelope you send it in - so if you post it on the 31st you'd still get the refund for the next month even if they don't receive it until the 3rd or 4th. As it says on the back of the tax disc:

"This license may be surrendered at any time for a refund of duty for each complete month left to run. A month will only count for refund if the license is handed in or put in the post on or before the last day of the preceding month".

And there's something about six month discs as well, I think the amount you get is the 12-month rate at the time the tax was bought divided by twelve for each full month, not the face value of the tax disc, as there's a surcharge on six-month discs.
