Suzuki gearbox 2 drain plugs?

Hi everyone, I was servicing my wife's Suzuki Baleno earlier and when it came to doing the gearbox oil change I noticed there is 2 drain plugs. Does anyone know why this would be? Both plugs had the magnet on the inside to collect the debris. I initially thought the top one was the fill, but I then found it further up the gearbox. Any thoughts?

Lower plug for draining, fill until it spills from the upper plug?

Don't know Suzuki gear but sounds about right from here.

Yep, but why would there be 2 drain holes? The first picture shows the 2 of them, the upper one is harder to see in the photo but it's like an inch above the other drain.

It's a 2016 manual. Here are the same photos with the drains marked red and the fill plug marked green. I'm just afraid in case there are 2 different fill plugs as well.

Looks like they drain separate sections.
I would take them both out, and see what comes out.

I removed the bottom one first so when I removed the other upper drain plug there was nothing came out. I initially thought it was the fill until I found the plug marked in green.

Lowest is drain, middle is fill level, top is fill hole? For a guess.

I'd want to be 100% sure before removing anything on a gearbox!!

On the volvo auto box theres a plug that looks like the fill point but removing it means a gearbox out repair!! Volvos also have specific oils for specific parts of the 4x4 system too....may not be relevant for a Suzuki but it taught me to be very careful!

I'm working on an older Renault 2.1D in my spare time, that has 3 separate oil systems ( engine + gearbox + diff !) so lots of drains / level plugs / oil fill holes, one of the gearbox ones is often overlooked so lots of these units self destruct due to lack of oil

The best advice I got was to make sure you can remove the filler(s) at the top before you even think about draining any of the oils.

Best check the owners groups / forums for folk who have experience of your particular motor, rather than many of us here who are making well intentioned guesses.

Can't remember exactly but Volvo were sort of similar...front diff, rear diff, haldex AWD, auto gearbox....various (expensive!) fluids required!

Even their power steering fluid was very specific and the rack could be ruined by using the wrong fluid!

Best bet is online forums I reckon as the info will be more current. Don't forget that the car manual could also be wrong!

Whatever you find out or do always remember to take the filler plug out 1st...nothing worst than draining the oil and finding you cant get the filler plug out due to snapped/chewed/or seized plug to put the oil back in. Hope my misfortune many years ago helps others

So it's almost been a week since I changed the oil in the gearbox, it's still working so far! Lol. I still never found a definite answer as to why there is 2 drain plugs, maybe it provides access to something in the gearbox? Thanks for the replies.

I've seen this a few times on gearboxes and even a few engines, you'll probably find that gearbox is used in another model of car where something obstructs one of the drain holes or the other

The same Baleno gearbox casing houses the different gear trains that are used when the vehicle is powered by a petrol or diesel engine. There are 2 oil level plugs each one specifically used for the type of engine used. The Baleno Owners Manual shows which level plug to use for a petrol or diesel installation.

Ours is the newer 2016 model. Don't think there is a diesel in the range.
