Surface Welding Transfer (STT) welding process.

I have added another album with pics of STT process for those who may be interested. Very basic spiel from me, if you want to know more I suggest you look at Lincoln Electric website, pump STT into their search engine.

I forgot to add to album spiel, practically nil spatter and fume when using, what more can a welder ask for

Could you explain a bit more about STT? I'll look at the Lincoln site too, but you'll probably tell me more honestly than them. What's it like on thin stuff? For example what if you had an old Renault built from 0.6mm sheet, and the gaps were consistent with my normal inaccurate prep work.

Some one will know but I'm sure I've heard of using tape instead of wire for high current welds?

I was using 1mm wire Simon and, the wire is normal mig welding wire, nothing special about it at all mate.............

TechnicAl will no doubt be more qualified to explain more accurately than me Malcolm, to a degree, STT is pulsing so rapid per second, kinda like pulse tig, there are peak & background parametors to set, along with some other variables, hence the reason large gaps can be filled in one pass. Main unit is basically a computer, checking and adjusting voltage ect ect, all the electrickery/electronics talk was rather difficult to take on board during a less than half day session. I still have plant, will do some 3mm when I have the time.

Malcolm, I do not think you can go below 1mm wire??? There is a flick switch on front of main plant which allows one to change from 1mm to 1.2mm and greater.

With plant costing mega bucks 5k plus for small unit in pic, larger unit with dual STT and fluxcore capabilities on a single plant @ 10k plus

More for land & subsea pipeline type work I'm afraid, unless you have the bucks of course

Sorry didn't notice this part Wasn't a root gap Malcolm, we were just phaffing around, 1st gap at 6mm slowly increasing upwards to 16mm. Basically an exercise on how good this process can cope welding difficult fit-ups, also an exercise on how the welder can manipulate the weld to his/her advantage!

Did you notice what wire you were using. There is a wire called SUPRAMIG ULTRA that works better on STT than any other. Its an SG3 wire with tightly controlled impurity levels so the surface tension of the steel is controlled and consistent.

Yes, you can use it on very thin steel sheet. Basically you control the heat input so you can set it to whatever you like. The problem is the cost but it is used by a few car manufacturers in the USA.
It was actually trialled on the Boron Steels but MIG brazing got the nod because it was easier set up and easier to sand flat. The strength of joint was better with STT but they can design around that.

I knew Al could give more accurate input than me, we too busy getting things going for my laddies to lay down a few beads, they did very well actually.........

Worth bearing in mind a "private album" is one you'd share with your nominated friends. I haven't looked into it enough to work out how to do that.

All the other albums are members only by default. It's because they are associated with member profiles, and we keep profiles private for your comfort and safety. If you want members only for an album set it to public. I didn't write the software.
