Most aerospace places I go to have a granite table in temp controlled rooms

Longbridge had one weighing best part of 40 tons as a base for a gantry/bridge CMM to measure complete bodyshells. The first one imported from Canada got broken in transit so they had to order another!.

You are NEVER scraping a piece of 8mm plate flat, unless it's so small you couldn't call it a 'plate'. The best you can achieve is to grind or sand the pitting off. Forget scraping, and especially forget scraping steel for a first job.

Best tool for this kind of thing is an old Planitor, a job like that will take seconds.
