Superb video - Making steel at Ravenscraig

I've just come across this on the Scottish Screen Archive - called "The Big Mill", and all about Ravenscraig Steelworks (mostly the Strip Mill) in Motherwell. Now all as flat as you like, but then, brand new and the shape of things to come. Well worth watching.

Thats a great find and one which brings back memories of what a great industrial nation we once were, I mean generations of a family would work in those places, Grandfathers, fathers and sons, amazing.

Shame nowdays, my son and daughter would probably end up working one in tesco's and the other in Asda, Part time

Im from Motherwell and its a bit sad to see it now. Ravenscraig is long gone, theres another vid on that site with a bit showing a large tower block being built(glencairn) in the 60-70's...that was demolished a month or so back. There was Motherwell Bridge aswell that fabricated and sent large components worldwide...all but gone now aswell. Ghost of a town now tbh...as said though, plenty of supermarkets.

In Scotland, Western Europe's largest hot strip steel mill Ravenscraig steelworks, near Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, was closed by British Steel in 1992, leading to huge unemployment in the area. It also led to the closure of several local support and satellite businesses, such as the nearby British Steel Clydesdale Works in Mossend, Clyde Alloy in Netherton and equipment maker Anderson Strathclyde. Demolition of the site's landmark blue gasometer in 1996, and the subsequent cleanup operation, has created the largest brownfield site in Europe. This huge area between Motherwell and Wishaw is in line to be transformed into the new town of Ravenscraig, a project partly funded by Corus.

Worse when you think of all the skill/knowledge gained through generations is lost. Same in every (former) industrial community i suppose.

Duffy, there's also a film on that site of the Invergordon Aluminium Smelter up on the Cromarty Firth. It was built in '71 and closed only ten years later in '81. Unbelievable. Sorry, but I know who I *****, and I'm not paying for *** bloody fun****. Apologies for going a bit ***itical, but there you are, that's life.

this country has gone right down hill as far as manufacturing is concerned which is stupid as we turned out some of the best and most reliable engineering ever made and drains i agree *** deserves nothing *** ruined industry
