Suitcase wire feeder

Are suitcase wire feeder popular only in USA? And what is their prime purpose? Shipbuilding? Or work in the field? Is there any reason to go with suitcase instead of to use common wire feeder?

I have a Hobart hefty wire feeder that came along with a arc-gen welder generator that I bought. It welds ok but no where near as good as a dedicated mig set ( although that could just be my particular one)

I suppose the benefits are the fact you can just plug it into your welder generator on site plumb in your gas an away you go, or alternatively use flux cored gasless wire,

I firm a friend of mine works for used a suitcase and gasless wire for overplating the outside of a blast furnace. Mainly due to time constraints .
