Suitable extension cable?

Hi all,

The garage and area that I'm likely to do work on my car is quite a way from the power supply in the house. I've got a Clarke 160TE which is ok to run on a 13amp supply, but wondered if I would be ok running it on a 50m extension reel?

I wont be doing heavy welds. Maybe a bit of exhaust work. Nothing heavier than 3mm max. Probaly normally inthe region of 1-2mm mild steel.

go for max 30 foot on 10 gauge or like 60 feet/20m on 8 gauge

Also you need to be sure and roll it all out to stop heating the cable too much!

I regularly have to use my little 140 amp inverter off one of these 50 mtr reels, never had a problem either tig or stick welding, as clem dog says, make sure you unroll it all.

Hi,

I found a junk stall on the local market had some second hand caravan mains leads for £8 each. These work well as they're fairly thick conductors (2.5mm I think)...

plus they have the right plug & socket on (blue) and the cable sheath tends to be bright orange so you can see it on the floor. I cut mine into two lengths, about ten feet and about 30 feet so I have a choice of the shorter one if I'm just working on the other bench in the workshop.

The longer lead gets me some way down the drive too.
