Suggestions for fixing a built in scroll pad / mouse on a laptop?

Hi, I'm looking for some PC laptop advice.

The built in scroll pad / mouse on my fairly new laptop has died. Systems runs Windows 11 Pro.
A few times in the past months the mouse seemed to freeze but started working again after less than a minute. Now it's 100 dead.
Keyboard, screen etc all work with no problems.

If I plug in a usb mouse that works, looking at diagnostics it says the mouse is working ok (but I suspect it's talking about the usb mouse)

If I unplug the use mouse I can't navigate to the diagnostics screens to see what it says abut the built-in scrollpad / mouse.


I'm not that familiar with this system so not even sure which diagnostics to use.
On the older Win7 etc "Device Manager" worked well for me, on this system it shows me the devices but no green good / amber caution / red fault flags next to them

I'll start the ball rolling with the obvious question even though I dont use windows as a desktop full time anymore, so most important what laptop?
The likes of a synaptics touchpad can break electrically of course, but its rare so the usual culprit is a driver change or something trying to take over the mouse input permanently.
You can plug as many mice as you want in and they all just show up in device manager, one of my thinkpads has a rubber pencil eraser style joystick right in the middle of the keyboard and a touchpad and both are separate mice in the os, if you go the properties you can see which one is which from the dialog. If only one mouse is showing with a external plugged in, then that itself is a issue.

So first things first, what laptop, so people can look up the hardware.
