this might make a few senior welders chuckle but how do i know for sure my chuck away bottle is empty?? sorry if this sounds daft.

Remove the reg and rattle it - you'll hear the valve move if it's empty. If it's a CO2 bottle you can feel the liquid move around inside if it's not empty.

Hi,

yes, they only last a few minutes, five or six maybe.

Each time you stop using it unscrew the regulator slightly as the on-off knob sometimes doesn't shut off the gas properly.

The best bet though is to get a full sized bottle, they work out much cheaper.

Sounds expensive, rental on a size W Boc cylinder, (thats a full size one) is £74.40 a year, thats only 20p a day, plus vat of course.

that is expensive when you put it like that! that price of 40p a day was from Air Products there was also a handling charge (even if you fetched it yourself). Paul iv never rented a bottle before how does it work? do you have to pay the years rent up front or put a deposit down??

Sorry I misled you slightly there that price is for a size Y, a W is £83.80 so 23p per day
With BOC you open an account and set up a direct debit, you can pay yearly up front, or monthly (£7.35 for a size W) so its just slightly more expensive, you have to pay a handling charge, currently £11.35 for collection, the gas is a further £39.85 for argoshield light, all plus vat, if you return the cylinder you will get a refund on the rental of any full unused months,
I don't work for BOC By the way, this is off the latest price list, air products is similar in the way it works except i think you need to set up the account several days before you need gas, BOC just ask for ID and bank details and let you take the cylinder away.

you see air products wanted £26 for a refill. thanks for all the info anyway paul i will ring a few more places tomorrow and then make a choice of who to go with. ali

What size cylinder was that for though, the small size X is £26.75, Size Y, £35.65,
Rental on Size X £5.25 / month, or £58.30 /year
Rental on Size Y £6.70 / month, or £74.40 / year

ok paul here are the prices.
boc. bottle size y £6.70 month £11.35 handling charge £35.65 for a refill.
air products bottle size x30 26p per day £14.95 handling charge £32.20 refill or if you go with the larger bottle x47 a refill is £19.93 so much better value if you go with the larger bottle. let me know what these prices sound like to you.
