Stronghand Adjust-O Magnet

Does anyone on here use Stronghand Adjust-O magnets, if so what do you think of them? I'm looking to get a few new magnets for work (mainly metal fab and rust repair on Minis) and quite like the idea of being able to turn them off to clean them.

So what's your opinion of them and can you recommend any other good welding magnets.

I used to use a big old magnet I have knocking around for holding stuff in place but I'm sure I noticed I was getting the arc drawn off course by the magnet sometimes when DC MMA welding so I gave up with it and didn't proceed to buying these special magnets as I had planned. These days I just use clamps. I believe AC welding overcomes this for MMA - MIG is DC though - presumably that is what you are using for car work? It would be useful to hear from someone who has experience with magnets and MIG? Are you already using magnets of a different type? Graham.

I used magnets all the time with mig. Yes, it affects the arc, but I just whack a tack as far from the magnet as poss, then take it off and carry on - no probs if you're aware of it. Realistically, you don't need to be miles away from the magnet to lay down a tack.

Different game, with TIG it plays havoc, if you are too close, making the arc wander, and the rod stick to the work piece.

Oh and if you do buy some, make sure they are the ones that turn the magnet off. That or put them in a plastic bag or you'll have a fur ball made from swarf

Thanks guys. I've been using normal red welding magnets (might be Clarke) but the magnet is exposed so pulls in all manner of filings which is a real pain in the ass. I did try putting it in a bag but they always seemed to split or melt so I gave up on it. I've found some other enclosed magnets that I'm going to try out as I can get 2 for the price of on Adjust-O-Magent.
