strong plastic that leaves a good finish

looking to make a butt pad for a shotgun i bought today, its a fairly old side by side, the butt of the stock is curved and has holes drilled for a pad and i want to keep it looking original.

looking for a bit of black plastic that i can shape down to suit, cut a few grooves in it with a file and drill 2 mounting holes, dont want anything brittle but nothing too soft either.

was thinking about nylon but not sure so thought i would ask...need a block about 5"x2"x1.5" or any nominal size near that.

will only be using a file, some sand paper and a drill on it so no need to worry about how it machines really

also, needs to black or dark brown in colour to match the original look of the gun

Search eBay for Delrin? Easily machinable or workable afaik.

forgotten about delrin, that is the sort of thing i need. have searched for an original pad but they are either damaged or going for stupid money, its not a difficult design so may as well make one

doubt if 41/4" X 2" X2" would do, ?????? got some 1" thick stuff as well, it would get your size out of. Black Delrin.

Acetal/Delrin will give the best finish from handworking, others like nylon are tougher to deal with; I've had some luck using a spokeshave to smooth off after doing rough cuts with saws or sanders.

just had a proper measure, and to give me enough to work with to get a good finish at end size i need a block that is minimum 6" tall, 2" wide and 2" thick, so basically i need a 150mm lenght of 50x50 square section (just to mix metric and imp)

sorry cant help with 6" X 2" X 2", Coud have done 1" thick.

What about casting a lump of resin?

Or use some polymorph & add in some black beads or colour to suit.

"Bakalite" used to be the preferred material
It was used in old electrical equipment
I have some 1/4 inch thick sheets that could be bonded together
This looks very nice when polished

Shape your delrin by sawing, filing, sanding etc. Finish with a quick blast from a heat gun, it gets rid of the little whiskers and puts a sheen on the plastic - try it out on some scrap and see if it gives you the desired effect.

change of plan all together now, i have rounded the edges of the stock off with sandpaper, filled the holes in with sawdust and wood glue mixed and sanded flat and will be putting a leather slip on butt pad on that was kindly given to me by a fellow syndicate member after he bought it and it is too big for his gun.

its actually the slip on version of the one in that video, i had considered making a leather one as ive got that vid in my favourites but its more effort than this gun is worth...i only paid 25 quid for it and apart from the butt pad its spot on as a rough gun so i dont want t spend too much on it really

What gun is it bb ? Pretty good quality side by sides can be had cheap as no one wants them compared to o/u's or magazine fed stuff.

Laurona eibar double trigger non ejector. A lot of colour left in the case hardening, very tight action, chrome lined barrels and the bores are spotless...could t believe it when I got there and he pulled it out f the cabinet.

Apart from the but pad missing there is nothing wrong with it. My father bought a Spanish no name sbs Saturday and its in fairly poor condition but still paid 50 for it. The stock is a tad short for me so this pad should solve that too although I can hit clays with it all day long as it is now

i prefer side by sides to over unders, or at least cheap over unders anyway...i wont be buying another gun now until i need one, which will either be if there is a lead ban as this one isnt stell proofed and non toxic is stupidly priced, or if i fancy a change from my sxp and want to go back to an semi auto for wild fowling and foxing but the sxp is doing everything it needs to so doubt i will change that any time soon
